Welcome to the
Atlantic Forest Association

mission

Protect remaining patches of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and its residents from environmental degradation ranging from illegal hunting or logging to anthropogenic factors. Create and foment socio-economic conditions and educational initiatives that foster a preservation mindset and behavior.

vision

Create and apply data-driven conservation strategies to understand biome dynamics combined with scientific research to build regeneration efforts specific for the Atlantic Forest. Our goal is to leverage this unique knowledge to help restore a flourishing ecosystem in degraded areas and support an ever-lasting ecological corridor.

value

We stand for conservation and preservation of the rich natural environment of the Atlantic Forest region, including preservation of the depth and diversity of native knowledge and ancestral practices of sustainability, combined with a scientific mindset as an effort to accelerate the restoration of threatened biomes.

PROJECTS

SCHOOL OF NATURE

Workshops and immersive experiences to discuss & disseminate sustainable practices, such as permaculture, bioconstruction, native knowledge, wildlife preservation and many more!

EYES IN THE JUNGLE

Camera traps that are placed throughout the forest to identify and monitor the movement of native and endemic animals. The processed data shapes our conservation strategies.

RESEARCH INSTITUTE

Field research to map, catalogue and characterise the biodiversity; from soild microorganisms and the intrinsict community of trees and plants to invertebrates and vertebrate animals.

PLAYGROUND IN NATURE

In partnerships with schools in Sao Paulo, this project allows students to spend an education day in the Atlantic Forest, learning about the importance of nature preservation.

Our projects are aligned with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Of the 17 SDGs, the main pillars of our Association are fully aligned with eight of the global goal: Goal 3 – Good Health and Well-being, Goal 4 – Quality Education, Goal 6 – Clean water and Sanitation, Goal 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, Goal 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities, Goal 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production, Goal 13 – Climate Action and Goal 15 – Life on Land.

Why the Atlantic Forest?

Despite being a small fraction of the great Amazon rainforest, the Atlantic Forest harbours a range of biological diversity similar to that of the Amazon (The Nature Conservancy, 2023).

Before deforestation, the original area used to be twice the size of Texas. Nowadays, only 12.4% of the Atlantic Forest remains, and is highly fragmented. The three major causes of deforestation are:

1) illegal logging and extraction of valuable timber species

2) land conversion to pasture, agriculture, and forest plantations

3) expasion of urban areas and suburban development

Protecting the Atlantic Forest plays an important role in mitigating climate change.

%

of the native fauna and flora have been killed and deforested.

$

The Atlantic Forest has a high degree of endemism – species found nowhere else on the planet.

$

The remaining Atlantic Forest areas are highly fragmented, which threatens the survival of endangered animals, such as the 21 endemic species of primates.

Meet the founders

This initiative is led by three women who are advocating for the preservation and restoration of the Atlantic Forest. They aim to promote native environmental knowledge through educational initiatives, understand the Atlantic Forest through rigorous scientific research to design personalised conservation strategies, and to include the community in the preservation efforts.
