The Atlantic Forest Research Institute
We aim to investigate and understand the biodiversity of the Atlantic Forest
Rigorous Scientific Research
will be applied to investigate and confirm native knowledge.
Characterisation
of trees, fruits, plants, fungi, insects and microorganisms.
Data-driven strategies
will be developed for conservation projects.

ONGOING PROJECTS

Acoustic Devices
status: preliminary
We aim to expand the ‘Eyes in the Forest’ by creating the twin sibling, ‘Ears in the Forest’ project. So far, we have not yet confirmed the presence of a range of endemic species, including primates. With acoustic devices, we will be able to confirm and monitor birds, primates, bats and even insects. With the identification of the species present, we can focus and develop tailored conservation programmes that are species-specific. For this work to happen, we are securing funding through grants.

Trees & Seed Bank
STATUS: ACTIVE
We are actively cataloguing the native trees in our land. This information is paramount to understand the ecosystem as it allows to see patterns and identifying trees that are key in animal’s diets.
Not just mapping the trees, we are also collecting the seeds. The seeds will be stored, and also planted. The saplings will be deployed to reforest the surrounding defragmented areas.

Environmental data
STATUS: PRELIMINARY
Data such as soil pH, air humidity, rainfall data, river flow in different seasons will be collected all year around.
This is data will connect with the monitoring of animals (Eyes & Ears in the Forest), and help us further in creating tailored conservation strategies. Once in place, we will take a step further and uncover the biodiversity of microorganisms in the soil.
